Privacy policy

Last updated 8 October 2026. Applies to the SpeedMap website and the SpeedMap Android app.

The short version

SpeedMap has no accounts, no analytics, no ads and no tracking. Your readings are stored only on your own device. Nothing about you is collected or sold.

What stays on your device

This data is kept in your browser's storage or in the app's private storage on your phone. It is never uploaded. You can export it as a JSON file, delete single readings or spots, or delete everything with Clear all. Uninstalling the app or clearing site data also deletes it.

What is sent over the network

A speed test has to move data to measure it. During a test your device sends and receives random filler data to and from the SpeedMap server (hosted on Vercel). The server measures how many bytes arrived and keeps nothing else: no spot names, no readings, no Wi-Fi details. The Android app also checks occasionally whether the internet is reachable by contacting the same server.

Like any website, the hosting provider (Vercel) processes your IP address and standard request information to deliver these requests, and may keep short-lived logs for security and operations under its own privacy policy. SpeedMap does not use these to identify you.

Location permission (Android)

Android only lets an app see the Wi-Fi network name and the access point it is connected to if the app has location permission. SpeedMap asks for it — only while the app is in use, and only after explaining why — so it can show which access point (for example, which mesh node) each spot uses. SpeedMap never reads or stores your GPS position or any coordinates, and the network name and access point ID never leave your phone. If you decline, every other feature still works.

Children

SpeedMap is a general utility and is not directed at children.
